W05 Reflection
What really stood out to me this week was regarding the boat story. Taylor Richards didn’t listen to anyone who told him he couldn’t do something. He seemed very humble because he was honored to be in the top 100, thought he would have ended up in the 70s or 80s, and ended up 11th out of 100 in the whole of North America. During the whole count down of businesses, by the time they got lower into the numbers, he was almost certain that they had forgotten about them. The next year they were ranked 6th out of 100 businesses. I love how humble Taylor was. He brings up the point that he is a regular person. I am constantly reminded during this class of a quote by Gordon B Hinckley Quotes where he says, “The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.” Richards was an example of this because he pointed out that he is a normal person, but he and his team worked hard and as a team together, they were able to accomplish great things within their business.
What also stood out to me was when he mentioned that being great is a whole lot more fun that being good or average. The difference between the two is not harder, so why not just be great? I think that is great advice and we can use it in our daily lives while just doing our day to day activities.
When I was growing up I always wanted to be a soccer player. I had played from when I was 4 up until college. I had college coaches who wanted me on their team for colleges, but I decided to listen to my parents who told me that I shouldn’t pursue the dream of becoming a soccer player. They told me not to waste my time and that I should pursue a career for a “real” job. So, I didn’t play at college level, I just went to school and had a part time job. I look back now and I always wonder what would have happened if I didn’t listen to my parents who told me not to take that route. I’m not a big sports watcher, but I do sometimes watch the finals of basketball or football, and I definitely watch the World Cup. I look at these athletes and I’m certain that their parents didn’t tell them that they couldn’t shoot for the stars. If they did, these athletes didn’t listen. I check in on the United States Women Soccer team from time to time and I always think to myself that I could have been one of them. There is no reason that I couldn’t have been if I worked my hardest, which is what I had always done. I know my parents meant the best, and I know that in the end, Heavenly Father is in control. I have been very blessed with where my life has led me however; the thoughts of “what if” do cross my mind from time to time. It was such a big passion of mine.
What I have taken from this experience is that I am very aware when my children tell me what they are interested in learning about, or achieving, or being when they grow up. I fully support any decision that they make and I want to be their biggest cheerleader. I want them to know, that I know, that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to. I want them to be successful and happy and I will do my best to be there for them whenever they need an extra push of “you can do it”s.
