W01 Reflection: Randy Pausch
I think Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams because his parent let him explore his creativity. He was able to write mathematic equations on the walls in his bedroom when he was a child. He was able to be the “master of his own domain”. I think this helps children to be independent and creative. In the long run I think it helps them to think outside the box and give them the confidence they need to explore other options in life. Randy Pausch focused on how to live your life the right way instead of how to achieve your dreams. He said, “The dreams will come to you”. After reading this weeks readings, I understand that more.
I feel that dreaming is important, in moderation. If we dream too much I feel that it is an escape from reality. Unless you are dreaming and then going to work, you aren’t going to get very far. If you are dreaming and then acting, you will be much more successful in those dreams.
One of my dreams as a child was to become a professional soccer player. I have played soccer since the age of four all the way through high school. When I was in high school, I played 1 year on the junior varsity team and 3 years on the varsity team, while also getting the award for MVP. I felt that I could really do it. My parents, on the other hand, said it wasn’t a good idea. I needed a “real” job. Soccer coaches at the local college wanted me to come play for them, and I didn’t because I had listened to my parents and started working at a bank instead. Looking back, I wish I had followed my dreams. I look at the women’s USA soccer team and I think to myself, “I could have really been one of those girls”. I really don’t have any doubt about it. Back to Randy Pausch, it is really great that his parents let him spread his wings when he was young and I really hope that my children do the same. When my children tell me what they want to be when they grow up, I fully support them. I want them to be able to follow their dreams as well and live a successful and fulfilling life.
