W02 Reflection: Entrepreneurial Journal

What did you learn from the W02 Study: Honesty & Business Ethics and W02 Study: How Will You Measure Your Life readings and videos?

What I learned from the Honestly & Business Ethics reading this week was how important it is to be a storyteller.  I find this true in my work life as my boss relates everything to a story.  When he does this, he catches everybody’s attention and I often find myself repeating the story and remembering the details years later.  I do not like public speaking like my boss does, nor do I like having everybody’s attention on me while trying to explain everything.  This is something that I will need to work on and improve.  What really stood out to me about story telling was the fact that Heavenly Father uses story telling to teach us.  Christ also spoke in parables.  It is obviously a great trait to have.

What also stood out to me was the video by Sharon Mays.  She says that we need to, “either do it or stop talking about it.”  I find this useful in my daily life at the moment.  I’m constantly at work or studying for school or studying for securities licenses.  I don’t have much time for enjoyment at the moment, but this is only a moment and I need to get to work and stop talking, or in my case sometimes complaining, about it.

This leads to the point of making effective choices, not longer days.  I will apply this to my life with making better decisions throughout my day.  I make good decisions, but I can always make better decisions to be more efficient and make better use of my time.

·       What are you looking forward to learning and experiencing?

I am looking forward to learning and experiencing by putting the Formula in action for myself.  I have always wanted to be a “morning person” but I tend to find my energy when I’m supposed to be going to bed.  I need to get in the habit of going to bed early and rising early.

I am also going to try to find the blessings in my life as Clyde Belfry and his brother Frank did in the hills of Uganda.  This is an example of a story that I will remember because of the outlook of the story.  The part that will always remind me of this story is the ending when it says, “Upon reflection of his and his family’s good fortunes, Clyde thought back to the days of his youth, and wondered aloud ‘What if the goats had not died?’”  There are so many times in my life where I could have had this experience and focused on the positive instead of dwelling on the negative.  I love the example that Clyde Belfry made, to focus on all of the good aspects of his life that has stemmed from something that did not go well at all.  I’m sure we can all see this in our lives, although it may take some time, but if we look, we can all see the Lord’s hand in our lives.  He is the one in control.

I also want to put into the practice of losing myself in the service of others.  I know many people who are so happy, genuinely really happy.  What I have noticed about them is how much they are involved in other people’s lives.  I tend to stick to myself.  I have a few good friends and I don’t really ever put myself “out there” to socialize and get to know other people.  I know if I push myself a little bit out of my comfort zone then I will be able to get to know others in order to service them better.
