W04 Reflection
· Which of the 7 habits has the most meaning for you?
For now, the habit of being proactive has the most meaning for me. I have really learned how much better it is to be proactive in my life instead of reactive. With all that I have going on, being proactive and studying and getting things done early is a much better result for me than to leave things until last minute and cram everything in. As I have mentioned before, I am studying for a securities license, while taking college classes, working full time and spending time with my family. I get overwhelmed with my securities studying because a lot of it is new to me. I have been in the finance industry for years, so I am familiar with it, but getting down to the nitty gritty is sometimes overwhelming. I find myself studying up until the wee hours of the morning. I’m studying for the securities license about four hours a day and I am still behind in my schedule. What I feel also goes along with being proactive is staying on the path. I tend to get obsessive about things and am always looking for a quick fix. Obtaining and understanding this information is not easy for me, and there isn’t a quick fix. I need to be very patient with myself and not quit when I don’t feel like I’m making any progression. I learned in the Mastery book that practice is the path to mastery. We cannot just give up and there are plateaus. When George Leonard spoke about the Mastery Curve, we read that we will have moments where we feel like we aren’t progressing but if you stay the course, everything will come together in the end.
· Why will the 7 habits help you fill your life with passion and purpose as you seek to achieve both a private and public victory?
The 7 habits will help me to fill my life with passion and purpose as I seek to achieve both a private and public victory because in order to stay on the course I will need to follow the 7 habits. In order to achieve my private victory, which, at the moment is to pass my license exams, I will need to follow the first three habits of the 7 habits. These first three habits include being proactive, beginning with the end in mind and putting first things first. In order for me to be successful with studying, I need to do all of these habits. Being proactive will help me to be on top of studying. Beginning with the end in mind will help me to focus on what the goal is and why I am putting forth so much effort into studying. Putting first things first helps me to prioritize what it is exactly that I need to get done.
The 7 habits will help me fill my life with passion as I achieve a public victory because this license will help my whole office and everybody that I work with. We, as a team, will be able to sharpen the saw within our industry. When I accomplish this goal, we will be able to have a win/win situation at work while all working as a team and accomplishing more goals and tasks. The 7 habits will be very helpful in my daily personal life and also in my daily work life. There are many self help books out there to read, but I find this particular concept very appealing because Stephen Covey focuses on our own personal values and how we can benefit from those habits in team and group settings.
